Happiness Tuesdays are here to tell you some things that make me happy and to share with you quotes, websites, and photos to make you happy!

Happiness Tuesdays #39

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) Having LASIK surgery in 2000 was one of the best things I’ve done….got rid of bifocal lenses, sliding down my nose in the heat, always changing prescription…for so many years!

2) Now I need reading glasses only – which is great!!  Those silly things are every where and very cheaply priced. I have pairs of glasses all over the house:)    2 in the kitchen, 2 in the family room, 1 in the den, 2 in the bedroom, and more in my purse!

see...lots of them!

3)…and then insight…the book, My Stroke of Insight, by Jil Bolte Taylor…is an amazing book, the lessons learned near the end are worth every page…nonfiction

Glasses, eyesight, insight….all to be appreciated!!

Happiness Tuesdays #38

Here are three things that make me happy:

1)  Torch Lake dip!!  Our group has been making this dip for decades and now the next generation continues the tradition. Would you like to know how to make this easy, delicious treat?

Here goes:  in a pie plate use a fork to mash an 8 oz. block of cream cheese, next layer a 10 0z. can of Hormel chili w/o beans, then slice a couple of green onions, and top with about a cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Microwave for 3-5 minutes and serve with tortilla chips. It is sooooo good!

2) Brownies..friends always say they love my brownies…I don’t know why exactly, they are definitely not homemade. Use a family size package, any brand of brownies with walnuts. Follow directions making sure not to stir too much, but bake for 3-4 minutes less than the minimum time suggested. When cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar…yum!

fresh out of the oven, just need the powdered sugar!

3) A plan!  I go through spiral notebooks like crazy! I’m not sure anyone else could follow my organizational plan, but I do write things down often.   What to do, when to do it, what’s coming next, what to write, who to talk to next…lists and lists and lists. Usually if I write it down, I remember it and don’t really need the list :)    But occasionally I have to go through a few different notebooks to find the information I need…love those notebooks!

just a few of the many :)

What makes you happy? Can you find the little things? Jump into your own happiness!!

Changing Tastes

Have your tastes in food changed over the years? Mine certainly have! It seems so strange when foods I hated when I was younger have become some of my favorites:

I love cooked carrots!    As a child they made me gag…the sight, the smell, and most definitely the taste! But today, bring them on!

I love asparagus…chilled, with dip, or cooked…yum!  I didn’t have asparagus as a young person, and then thought they looked like they would taste bad…foolish, foolish:)  Delicious!

I love guacamole….avocado, tomatoes, garlic, lime juice, salt and pepper…please leave out the cilantro for me…soo good with chips! I didn’t have avocados as a child either, and as I got older the consistency seemed strange. Now, anytime is the right time for those yummy green things:)

Aren’t you grateful when your taste buds mature?? Give your kids a chance…some things just don’t taste good until you grow up!!

junk food always wins...ha, ha!

Continuing to Remember Who We Are

For most of us, the first few weeks of school are complete!  I know, I’m retired now so why do I care??  Because…I think once an educator, always an educator!!

I will always be concerned with the school system – its positives and its negatives. We have wonderful children with abilities and the willingness to learn, and then we have the higher-ups who insist on old-fashioned structure…rigidity and procedures…without concerns for actual brain research that requires compassion, boundaries, and joy.  From one extreme to another and everything in between!

Please don’t get me started on the negatives because the positives are so much more necessary. Let’s all focus on what kids can and should do – inside and outside ‘the box’. America’s inventive, ingenious, and sometimes weird mentality should be encouraged because “that is who we are”…..the USA at its best!!

go for it, guys

Continuing to remember the important parts of who we are :)

being weird.....:))

Encourage your children to use their imaginations and curiosity to enhance whatever they are learning!

Here are 3 things that make me happy:

1) this may be weird, but….I like the ‘sound’ of the color  - asparagus green!

2) helping the teachers at my former school check reading and spelling inventories…they have so much paper work, and I….wait for it….like it!!

3) learning how to catalog new books in the media center at school…I’m very much a newbie at this, so I hope I can be helpful!  Books like these should always be in the hands of kids, instead of waiting in boxes to be put on the shelves:

great lessons in these books

hilarious lessons here

checked in a bunch of these beauties:)

What makes you happy may not be what makes me happy, so find what that is….and do it!  Share with your kids what makes you smile. Find out what makes them smile. Smiling is a choice, so go smile today:))

Who We Are

Who we are should not depend on circumstances, but on belief systems.

So….who are you? Are you encouraging and kind? Are you thoughtful? Do you think that what you say and how you say it matters? Are you the right kind of role model for children?

I say the answer for all of us is “Yes” if we take the time to think before acting, or reacting, in haste…easier said than done, I know…but maybe if we all try just a teensy bit harder to find the good in others and in ourselves, we can be the kind of role model we would like to be.

Here’s a little more from “Letters from a Guardian Angel”:

“Rejoice in the beauty that you create with your hands, your heart and your mind. You are creating with each choice you make. Choose love, laughter, kindness, and joy.”

I LOVE this quote…I choose to try harder:)

choosing kindness

we're very good friends, my brother and I :)

The sun is back – there is beauty all around us – choose to find it:)

hanging out with great friends!

2) yesterday was finally cool enough that…..after some help from Chad in throwing stuff away….I could actually clean the garage!! Finally a sparkling floor – old salt, leaves, and just plain dirt gone!!

3) and yet again….lovely cat who sleeps ( a lot ) and keeps me company!

The beginning of the school year…the end of the summer….fall coming soon. Try to find the beauty in all of it…enjoy and be happy:)
