what do you collect???

Did you have a collection of anything when you were a kid?  I did!!  I loved dolls…all kinds! I played with Ginny dolls constantly, but I must have played them right out because I don’t have any left. I saved many of the dolls that I collected in the 50′s. Some of them (when shared at a school when I was an adult) were ruined…not quite enough supervision:(  So a beautiful bride doll is no more, and many of the costumes have been a bit tortured. But after finding the box of dolls in the attic a few weeks ago, I can still remember the joy these dolls brought to a little girl!!

I had a collection of Storybook dolls which came in the mail once a month:

I don't remember all of them, but one is Little Bo Peep!

how about a bridal party?

can you figure these out?

I also was a member of an International Doll Club. I have the dolls, but I don’t have all the excellent extras that were sent…like coins, stamps, and information about each country!

As a mom to 2 boys, dolls were not a priority in my house! But I still love them. Next week I’ll show you a few more of my treasures!

Do your children love certain things? Do they get to keep them? I know, sometimes your house can become a trash heap of ‘favorites’…but some things need to be special and saved.

More to come….

Happiness Tuesdays #43

Happiness Counts!

Happiness Tuesdays are here to tell you some things that make me happy and to share with you quotes, websites, and photos to make you happy!

Happiness Tuesdays #43

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) my favorite season – fall :)

ever since loving fall during college days at Central Michigan University…I have waited for the colors and smells and the feel of autumn…

2) the leaves in Michigan are amazing…red, yellow, orange, gold…sometimes all on the same tree…changing and dropping off the trees at different times throughout the season

3) sunshine and breezes during this season are so much appreciated…love them

Ahhh!! Beautiful!!! I love autumn when the sun shines, the wind blows, and the leaves fall!  Have fun with those children during this special time of year :)

Halloween Tips

Our family has always had great fun for Halloween! The boys were involved in all the wonderful activities that October has to offer.

Going out to find the best pumpkins while visiting the cider mills for yummy cider and donuts.

finding the best pumpkins

we like october!

Changing those simple orange gourds into silly, amazing, or scary jack-o-lanterns.

using safe pumpkin knives gives a good start

Green Lantern lovin' those jack-o-lanterns

aren't these great??

Finding costumes that don’t involve much spending or sewing, but that the kids loved.

pajama ninjas!

throwing together pieces that work!

Halloween can be fun, but it can also be stressful. Calm down! Enjoy the simple moments, and don’t add in more than you can handle. Sometimes cutting down on the extra parties and get-togethers can make the one time ‘trick-or-treating’  become more special to the family as a whole. You have to decide what works for your family. When your kids are young, I hope you can focus on them and leave your adult time activities to take a second place just for one night :)

It’s coming soon!!! Are you ready?? What will your kids be for Halloween?  Have fun and enjoy!

Our Duty

Try this quote on for size:

“There is no duty we so much underrate as the

duty of being happy.”

Robert Louis Stevenson

No Talking?? Really?

Help!!  I have laryngitis!! Really….no voice at all, since Tuesday! This is very strange…no sore throat, a very minor cold, but I really can’t get sounds out. Think about answering the phone..ha, ha, very weird…I squeak out something, and the response is ‘Pardon me?’  Good thing for texting and emails, right?

Does anyone have a quick cure?? Because Monday is the night for our big book signing!!! I don’t want to have to wear a sign that says, “Sorry, I have laryngitis!”  Any of your gramma’s special hot toddies or lozenges?? Thanks for any of your ideas!!

just in case you're not tired of hearing about our book yet.... :)

Maybe your parenting skills can help me out with a solution, but I must admit…I don’t think kids get laryngitis as often as adults. I saw very little of that over 41 years of teaching…what do you think?

Artistic Endeavors

I’m going to share with you some of the creative art work done by my sons! They constantly amaze me!! Not only do they create fantastic things on their own, they also design and redo areas of my house….and usually when I’m gone, so all the mess is cleaned up when I return home!! How lovely is that?? They have redone a bathroom floor, an entire laundry room, completely redone the Florida kitchen and just recently removed and redid the deck off my bedroom! I love it! They do a great job…lots of skills in constructing, electrical, painting…all of it!!

The part I will share today is their own creative streak:

a sort of a 'thinker' statue!

Chad creates these symbolic representations for birthdays, weddings, etc.

the counter top in the kitchen

I don’t have a picture of the waterfall feature Chad designed and built for his backyard…but very cool!

Scott did this all in wood :)

this 'plastery' sculpture hangs in the bathroom

an original window box, about 6 feet wide

There are many more projects they have done…all beautiful and thoughtfully done. Can you tell that I’m so very proud of them??

What kind of artistic talent do you encourage in your kids?? They will love it later in life….

Happiness Tuesdays #41

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) I went on a fantastic trip with six awesome friends…

seven of us at the beginning of the trip :)

2) We saved up for three years to go on a cruise to the Mediterranean. Now I need to study to get all the different societies in some sort of chronological order…all so very interesting and beautiful!

3) Now I am back in my own sweet home…ahhh!  Worn out, but happy!

I took way too many photos so you may see a few along the way in the future :)

Vacations, with and without children, lead to great memories!!
