Are There Senior Citizens in Your Life?

Since beginning to deliver Meals on Wheels to seniors last July, I have noticed that MANY of them have inoperable doorbells. Because a high percentage of them also have some difficulties with hearing, vision, and/or mobility they are not always aware when someone is at their door. Those visitors who are at the door cannot tell whether someone is home…and just arriving slowly….or whether they are not at home.

Because I call them before leaving I can tell how many times they might have missed out on someone at the door. Sooo, here’s a thought for those of you with elderly relatives or neighbors. Check their doorbells and make sure they are both working and loud. If they are not, consider buying a new wireless doorbell for them.

After T got one for my mom in Florida, I decided to get one for myself (my doorbell has been erratic for years). Wow! What a difference! And it’s so easy to install!!

This part plugs in to any outlet you choose and can be moved at any time:

It has a very loud chime…with choices for 1 bell, a double bell, or a Westminster chime. It is totally wireless.

The actual doorbell attaches either with double-sided tape or screws, both of which are included.

I bought 2 of these for 2 of the Meals on Wheels folks…partly for them and partly for all those who deliver. They work so well, and the seniors were very happy for the gift (they actually wanted to pay for them…but my idea, my money). I found my on Amazon…should cost less than $20:))

Check out the seniors in your lives…see if these wireless doorbells might be a tiny act of kindness for them:))

So You Wanted Recipes!

I guess I got told!!! Apparently it is rude to post photos of great food without including the recipes….oops:)) Who knew???

Soooo, here’s the recipe for this delicious cobbler:

Yes, I found this on Pinterest…yummy!

You need: 1 16-oz. pkg. of any kind of frozen fruit ( I have used peaches and dark cherries). Place the frozen fruit in the bottom of a 9×13 pan.

Then a package of white or yellow cake mix. Sprinkle it, as is, over the fruit in the pan.

Finally, a can or equivalent amount of 7Up, Sprite, Squirt…whatever…it also can be diet!!  Pour over the dry cake mix enough to wet everything.

Do not stir!!!

Bake for about an hour, 350 degrees.

That’s it…delicious!

Now for Spaghetti Salad…lots of different names, but that’s what we call it. This recipe comes from a long-time friend who gave the recipe to F2. Our family loves it!!

Cook 1 lb. of spaghetti

While that is cooking  combine these ingredients:

1 green pepper, chopped

1 cucumber, chopped

1-3 tomatoes, chopped

1 bottle of McCormack’s Salad Supreme

1 cup of Parmesan cheese

1/2 of 8oz. bottle of Wishbone Italian dressing

Add in drained and cooled spaghetti(run under cool water)

Mix and refrigerate.

When ready to serve, add rest of Italian dressing.

Everyone seems to love it:))

Whew! Have I taken care of my obligations now??

Taking Advantage of a Beautiful Day

A beautiful, warm, sunny day…middle of the week…what should I do??

I decided to head to the east side of the state (where I was born)…I went to the beach!! Lake Huron in Port Huron…right by Fort Gratiot lighthouse. I brought a book, a beach towel, and a pop…yes, I am a Michigander!!

The beach leads down to the rocky shore just the way I remember. I did not test out the water since I remember how cold it can be even in August!! But there were a few families there with little ones of 2 or 3…wading and playing in the water. They were having the best time!!

I loved seeing the lighthouse. I had 2 different 4th grade classes that went on field trips there…so interesting! The pictures show the Blue Water Bridge in the background…heading straight for Canada.

On the way home, I stopped at the Coney Island in Port Huron…a wonderful landmark for anyone who ever lived there. I took my lunch to Marysville just south of Port Huron and sat along the river enjoying the lovely day before heading back home to reality!!

Going ‘back home again’ is always a delight!!

Brunch at The Whitney

What a beautiful day we had yesterday…in all ways! A gorgeous Michigan spring day, my most favorite people in the world, and a delicious brunch at an elegant, old Detroit mansion!!

Every single bite of food was amazing! From scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and wonderful potatoes to jambalaya, shrimp and grits, beef and mashed potatoes, and prime rib. Then to a salad station and a bread station. After eating all this and having unending mimosas…upstairs to a dessert station!! I had bananas foster for the first time…yum!!!

this is a ceiling!!

stairways and railings...

Maybe you remember how I love piano music….:)  The piano player was stationed right next to us, and I was delighted by his masterful playing along with his absolutely engaging personality ( he just loved playing!)….

celebrating L's birthday...piano player played 'Happy Birthday' for her:))

Super Saturday

Just a test for a possible Super Saturday to take the place of Joyful Thursdays. I can’t seem to make up my mind!

But I am grateful and happy for all kinds of things. So I will share some of those with you now under a temoporary name change:)))

1) I actually got to spend some time with my good buddy Bev who now lives in California…she was in the area so I went over to bug her a bit….loved every bit of it:))))

isn't she awesome?

2) I’m still enjoying the green of spring…the flowers on the trees are still hanging in there, so beautiful…and sunshine almost every day. Ahhh, lovely!

lilacs?? ....almost!

this little beauty will be huge!

another one growing its way to beauty

3) I just watched an hour-long program on TV with nothing but Nat King Cole singing. I love his mellow voice!! It made me head to the internet to see if I could find some of his songs to play on the piano!!

some of my dad's old songbooks:)

My head is still confused about how to continue my grateful pages. Hmmm, maybe I won’t name them a specific name. Maybe they’ll just appear whenever they appear!  Unless folks are looking for them, I guess that part doesn’t matter. Are you looking for them under a certain name??

10 Words

Today’s “Every Day in May” post is called ‘Sell yourself in 10 words or less’

Hmmmm…I have some words to share, but whether they are actually who I am or who I would like to be …I’m not sure!

That’s it!! That’s all I’ve got…what do you think?? Did I sell myself? I guess that depends on …as what…right? Can you tell the subtext on some of the words??  Determined instead of stubborn…particular instead of picky…having both soft and strong together…I obviously am not sure whether my characteristics are perfect for anybody but me. But I do think I like myself as I am:))

yup, that's me:)

Favorite Quote

Some of my favorite bloggers have been doing an ‘Every Day in May’ blog….way too adventurous for me:)) But there are some great topics that I may have to try here and there during the rest of the month!

Today’s topic: What is your favorite quote?

That is not an easy thing for me to answer because I love inspirational quotes of all kinds. But one quote has been a part of my life for what seems like forever:

In all ways, at all times, by all people…this should be uppermost in all of our minds. Doing what’s right both educationally and emotionally for our kids will lead to the most important characteristics becoming those that lead these kids successfully into the future. Ignoring the academics doesn’t work, but neither does ignoring the emotional. For those who try to maintain a businesslike atmosphere in schools…shame on you! Learning comes in all forms but must be integrated into the whole person and all centers of the brain. Whether you are a parent, teacher, administrator, or businessman on the street….please use your brain and your heart to influence those who influence our children.

Whew! I guess I got that off my chest, huh?
