Intentions instead of Resolutions

For those of you who have been hanging around our blog for a few years, you know that I have been doing a list of intentions’ rather than ‘resolutions’ for a couple of reasons:

1. the stress involved in trying to complete resolutions leads to feeling bad instead of feeling positive…doesn’t really go along with my ‘mantra’!!

and

2. intentions can easily be ongoing…so when you complete them you can feel successful, when you start you can feel successful, and anywhere along the way you can feel successful….much easier to adjust or even cancel as you, yourself, change.

In the past, some of the things I have completed include:

having the piano tuned and taking piano lessons

completing 3 quilts made from F2′s tshirts

organizing photos, both digital and print

finding photos like these and being able to make folders online

cleaning specific areas of the house, like the garage and the basement

finding treasures

needed cleaning, right?

doing as many philanthropic endeavors as possible..love them!!

Anyway, now my list of intentions becomes more mental than physical…I want to help my kids in any way that I can, including caring for the new grand baby in my life!! I don’t think I need to write any of that down…because I love every part of it :) :)

Most definitely, Happy Parenting!

In case you hadn’t heard….

We are totally surprised with the number of new blog readers:  wow! thanks, everyone, for joining us on our journey. For those of you lovely folks who have been with us for some time, you know we talk about those things that make us happy…and joyful parenting! So, just in case you new readers didn’t know about our parenting book: How to Break 10 Common Childhood Myths …

Here it is  :)

Chad (son) and Diane (mom) wrote the book together to help parents find easier ways to have children who are delightful, respectful, responsible, and eventually independent adults! There are 10 common misbeliefs that kids grab onto and keep forever without a parent’s guide to let go of them. We included lots of stories from our lives…in both of our voices!

Feel free to head to Amazon to find our pretty little book in paperback or on Kindle. It is also available online through Barnes and Noble. It does make a great gift for new parents or grandparents, but also for those with kids anywhere from age 1-18.

For any of you delightful people who already bought one…we express a huge thank you to you. We hope you found the book helpful and enjoyable. Feel free to express your thoughts, good or bad, for others to see.

Christmas gifts anyone??  This is a plug for the book not because of our making any money but because of our love for kids and our hopes for improving future generations!

Christmas tips

For any of you wondering what got me started blogging in the first place…

I was very much interested in helping parents – with ideas to share about children and Christmas – always hoping for respect, manners, and joy to be a major part of every child’s world.

From December, 2010 … Part 1 of 3

This is the first of a three part series on holiday gift giving.
Today we’ll talk about the “giving” of presents. How do you involve your children in the giving spirit of the season?? Well, the operative word here is INVOLVE!

Decide with your children who they will give gifts to: Mom, Dad, brother, sister, grandparents, teacher, and anyone else you think appropriate. Remember that some of the most precious gifts family members can receive are those that have been made by the children in their lives.

Then decide, based on the child’s age, who will pay and how much. When children are very young, obviously the parents will be in charge of buying gifts and helping with decision-making. As children get older they can begin contributing some of their own money as the decision of what to give becomes more their own. Many schools offer Santa Shops where kids can purchase inexpensive items for all of their special people, and in some cases, the Santa Shop elves even help them with wrapping presents before the kids take them home.

Do include your children in the wrapping of gifts to give to family members. Involving your kids in thinking about what to give, who to give to and why, and preparing the gift increases their ability to care about others and to think about someone besides themselves.

an obvious overabundance!!
gifts of clothing can be fun:)
Christmas photos when they’re young…
…and when they’re older – always important!!

Remember to teach your children important messages in the little things you do every day, especially during the holidays!

Super Saturday #22

Hurray for Super Saturday #22…

Beautiful things, exciting things, inspiring ones…I’ll share with you those things that bring me joy and make me happy!

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) helping Mom organize Carl’s video tapes…Tom, you are in trouble when you get here:)))))

After looking through 3 file cabinet drawers, one wooden cabinet, and a TV stand, I found well over 200 tapes!!!! Yikes!!

now, these are all family tapes

these are all space tapes

all 200 of these are for you, Tom, to check out to see if they need to be kept or pitched:))

2) spending time with these two lovelies…

aren't they cute?

3) another beautiful sunrise….don’t be too upset. It’s cloudy and raining right now…but still in the 70′s ;)

Have a beautiful and happy weekend!!

Super Saturday #21

Hurray for Super Saturday #21…

Beautiful things, exciting things, inspiring ones…I’ll share with you those things that bring me joy and make me happy!

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) I did remember to buy some flowers to pass out to the Meals on Wheels seniors:

pretty yellow!

Comments included: “Thank you sooo much!”, “These will sure brighten up my day”, and my favorite: “ohhh, posies for my sweetie!” from a gentlemen for his wife:))  There were also a few shocked faces, but I think everyone liked the sunny flowers!

After leaving some at the senior center where the meals are prepared, I took these beauties home to brighten up my kitchen!

2) This over-laden apple tree is in one of the senior’s back yards. I’ve watched it with blossoms and then tons of apples this year after absolutely none last year! Check out the spike of tree at the top still trying to stand tall after all the rest of the branches have bent under the load of apples! I guess we could use this for a metaphor of our lives, huh? Stand tall, everyone:))

3) …and you know this little, okay big, guy is my forever buddy!! He had a birthday…12 now!!! Yikes! I guess he needs his beauty sleep:)

look at that cute little nose:)

Enjoy your last Saturday in October….are you ready for Halloween??

Super Saturday #20

Hurray for Super Saturday #20…

Beautiful things, exciting things, inspiring ones…I’ll share with you those things that bring me joy and make me happy!

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) reminiscing over photos…Danube River Cruise starting with 3 extra days in Prague, awesome! Just a few for you to see of the many 100′s I took!!

Prague Castle

in a train station!!

beautiful stained glass

my buddies, just arrived from long flight!! Gorgeous hotel...Boscolo!

2) birthday dinner for Chad…I fancied up the table, a rare occurrence….but got down to basics for dessert!

potato soup and then pot roast...

the 'famous' cake knife, a smaller version of our favorite bump cake, and a sneaky 'candle' to blow out:))

3) I added another Meals on Wheels day to my schedule…now I’ll be doing the same route on Tuesday one week and on Thursday the next! It’s nice to get to know the people from week to week. They’re not always the same but many are there some weeks and back again later weeks. It may be time for me to grab some flowers again to pass out to these sweet people!

Find your happiness and spread it around…happy Fall and Happy Sweetest Day!

The Story of the Limo

Another wedding story for you…are you ready??

A limousine bus was hired to take the wedding party to the ceremony site: Ladies first, from the hotel to the golf course then the men from one of their houses to the golf course. The bride and bridesmaids were picked up and delivered exactly as planned. The guys were to be picked up next…while the bride was secreted away…and delivered. Nothing happened…no guys…waiting, waiting, …hmmm! What’s going on?

Finally a bridesmaid checked with the guys who were still waiting to be picked up and then called the limo company. Talk about defensive…they said that’s not what they were told, they went back to the hotel to pick up guests (the hotel had its own shuttle for that). After demanding a refund, the girls called the guys and said, “Get here now!!”  This was 30 minutes before the ceremony was to start.  We all assumed there would be 3-4 cars zooming up…there were 7 groomsmen and the groom to be delivered.

Instead….look what came!!

isn't this great?

This beautiful car…which just happened to be in the wedding colors…belongs to one of the groomsmen! All of the guys were in it!!!

yup, they are in there:))

Out comes the groom…

Ready for the big day!!

The car looked a bit like a clown car as all the guys poured out, but it did save the day! The ceremony started about 10 minutes later:))

Sometimes things happen for a reason!! No limo…not a big deal when a better story is the result:)))

Super Saturday #18

Hurray for Super Saturday #18…

Beautiful things, exciting things, inspiring ones…I’ll share with you those things that bring me joy and make me happy!

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) trying to decide if the cat is approving of my reading material or keeping me from reading it:)))

2) enjoying the pouring rain from inside the house…curled up, reading…if the cat allows it…, watching mindless TV  -  all just because I can!   A definite perk of being retired!!

3) having a lovely little lady on the Meals on Wheels route say to me, ” Dear, I love your hair. It makes me happy!”  Isn’t that the sweetest thing to hear???
