Sharing

My dad, Robert Gordon Horn, was a veteran of WWII.

in the service in the early 40's

His mom, my grandmother..Maud Jowett Horn…kept this service record from the time he entered the service until he finished:

this contained photos, a record of all correspondence sent and received from my dad, and newspapers articles

My dad was a member of the Army Air Corps (before there was an air force) as a bombardier:

my dad, far left first row, with his flight crew

My parents were married in June of 1943 and in January of 1944 my dad was sent overseas.

before being deployed

He was shot down over Germany in Feb. and was missing in action for all of the 6 weeks of lent. On Good Friday, my mom was notified that he was alive and a prisoner of war in Germany. He was a captive there for 15 months before he returned home at the end of the war. He was one of the lucky ones to survive the action of World War II.

Luckily my dad was able to come home and begin our family:)  He served our country and should be remembered for that. But he also served our family until his sudden death from a heart attack when he was only 44. We remember him today….

Honor all those who have served in the past and those who are continuing to do a huge service to all of us who live in this great, though sometimes flawed, country. God Bless You!

Sweet Memories of Carl

This wonderful man married my mother 46 years ago…within 2 months of my marriage to F and my brother’s marriage to his wife….long lasting togetherness!

He has been known for his ‘stories’…retold with joy again and again, his love for his friends and family, and his great love for his church and his God. I am glad to know he is now in a peaceful, joyful place joining others who he loves.

with his sweetie pie…I love this picture!

look at that great smile

with my boys and their girls…now husbands and wives

he loved his hats :)

a bunch of his family...

another hat...

he 'inherited' lots of different members to his family

yup, another hat and a great smile!!

this is his favorite

aren't they cute??

2 honeys gone :(

Many of the family photos I have… wound up in a CVS folder and made into a book for Carl, but now I can’t easily retrieve them…so those of you who didn’t know Carl can be grateful I’m about done. BUT those of you who did know him, know that I would post a bucketful more if I thought it would help us in our grieving process. I posted what I found on my computer…didn’t leave anyone out on purpose…just couldn’t find more right now!!

So…as Carl would say…ADIOS!

with love and happy memories,

Diane

Family Love

Family….children, granddaughter, birthday= LOVELY!!

What a special day for me…I got to spend time with this little beauty:

…with her puppy:

loving her ‘monkey’… :)

It was so much fun, and then there was more!!! Little darlin’ was all dolled up to go out to eat with us:

Not only did I get treated with dinner at my favorite spot, but I also received gifts that I love…I didn’t need them, but I did want them…if you ask I’ll let you know what they were ;)

Sweet little one was wide awake for the 20 minute ride to the restaurant and then promptly fell asleep for the entire dinner…she has the BEST manners :) )

Back home for more hugs and snuggles before I headed to my house for the night….want to know what I thought of the day???

PERFECTION!!!  All the people I love the most….I’m still in a daze of blessings!!

Gratitudes

Well, I haven’t been on here for a few weeks, not because I don’t care but because I do!!!  I don’t want to leave you with inconsequentials or silliness or any kind of negativity…so I thought and thought about what you might like to hear! My response was…hmmm, I have no idea:))) So, I am back to what I love! I have had Happiness Tuesdays, Thankful Thursdays, and Super Saturdays in the past, and I did love sharing with you things that make me happy. I am still going to share those kinds of things with you but without the label…I am trying not to categorize myself too much!!

The main object causing me infinite happiness these days is the adorable granddaughter…3 months old and a delight! How perfect is it to be able to watch your son’s little girl 2 days a week… I’ll tell you: Perfectly perfect!!

newborn sweetness

And many more perfectly perfect photos of the little one:

LOVE this pic...

she says, "seriously, another picture???"

stylin'...

This little sweetie will be keeping me happy for years to come!!!

And here is my cat, thinking he is much smaller than he actually is, sleeping in a shoe box!!

Finally, my philosophy, in a nutshell:

Loving life because life is good!!!

Christmas Plans

How about a recap from one of the first blog posts from Childhood Myths??   December, 2010

How did those letters go that your kids wrote to Santa? Did they ask for too much…did you help them adjust?

1. Kids do not ‘need’ lots of toys – help them see the difference in needs and wants early. Make sure they understand that they will not get everything on that list, nor should they. Santa has many children to give to and shares his toys around the world.

2. Do not give your children all that they ask for. It saps the excitement from each moment because they begin to understand that, no matter what, they really will get it all.

3. Christmas morning at our house was always “stockings first”. The kids had to wake us up so we could go downstairs together for our stocking stuffers…small things – fruit, matchbox cars, socks. Everything was ‘oohed’ over and appreciated.

not really awake, but ready!
older, and much more ready…with Corky

4. When we, as a family, opened gifts under the tree it was always one gift at a time. Everyone watched until that gift was opened, then we moved on to the next, including Mom and Dad. We alternated gifts from Santa and ones from parents. The kids knew they needed the right grateful attitude when opening presents…or we just might stop;)

5. All during the holidays have the kids help. Chad and Scott helped make cookies, cook, wrap presents for others, straighten up. After Christmas Day see if the kids can find toys they’re ready to let go of (ones their new gifts can replace). Have them go with you to drop these things off at a shelter or another organization that helps people.

still in jammies, but helping up a storm!

Try to instill that attitude of gratitude early. It can begin to enhance their ability to think of others on their own as they get older.

Christmas brotherly love :)

Good luck during the holidays with gratitude!

The Grands…

How about an up-date on these two lovely people??

smiling at the rehab center

When we visited Carl today he was happy as a clam! We gave him a cheese biscuit from Red Lobster…took him a minute before he decided he liked it, but then…yum!

Grabbing the hand of his ‘sweetie-pie’….while holding on to that biscuit!

Mom gave Carl this Jamaica hat to wear instead of the LA cap he wouldn’t give up…he says it’s ‘ok’…

Mom is back home in her condo now continuing to improve from hip surgery after a fall. She spent 3 1/2 months in the rehab with Carl for therapy…lots of pain, but they spent much of every day together and enjoyed that!

She has a wonderful neighbor who is keeping tabs on her and helping her with things she can’t yet handle on her own.

wonderful Irene

She has amazed everyone with her recovery!!!  94 and hanging in there!!

We went to happy hour for snacks and a bit of bingo…yup, I said bingo ;)

Carl took this photo for us :)

Here Mom is, looking feisty…using her walker in the house and a cane and someone’s arm outside the house.

We are all very proud of her hard work in doing way better than anyone thought she could! Now, if we can just get her to slow down and take the advice of the professionals…we could rest a little easier!!

Way to go, Mom!!

I choose my sweet Fred..always and forever!

Out to celebrate life tonight, with the TLG…toasting memories with our B52′s….
