Sunshiny Sunday #4

Here are three things that make me happy, bring me joy, and keep me positive:

1) Giving blood in a blood drive….before and during: NO! That does not make me happy at all. I really don’t like giving blood. But…after I am done, I am so happy that I have contributed to someone else’s health and happiness.

2) These 5 beauties give me so much joy! They took me out for my birthday to a new restaurant…delicious! And a very needed gift that I would have procrastinated on doing myself!!  They are so smart :)

3) My little cutie in all her glory:

rocking her sunglasses

driving around in her 'ride'

checking out her 'kicks'

:) :) How's that for a pose??? Ha, Haa!!!

Loving my life….find the happy in yours and enjoy it!!

Christmas Plans

How about a recap from one of the first blog posts from Childhood Myths??   December, 2010

How did those letters go that your kids wrote to Santa? Did they ask for too much…did you help them adjust?

1. Kids do not ‘need’ lots of toys – help them see the difference in needs and wants early. Make sure they understand that they will not get everything on that list, nor should they. Santa has many children to give to and shares his toys around the world.

2. Do not give your children all that they ask for. It saps the excitement from each moment because they begin to understand that, no matter what, they really will get it all.

3. Christmas morning at our house was always “stockings first”. The kids had to wake us up so we could go downstairs together for our stocking stuffers…small things – fruit, matchbox cars, socks. Everything was ‘oohed’ over and appreciated.

not really awake, but ready!
older, and much more ready…with Corky

4. When we, as a family, opened gifts under the tree it was always one gift at a time. Everyone watched until that gift was opened, then we moved on to the next, including Mom and Dad. We alternated gifts from Santa and ones from parents. The kids knew they needed the right grateful attitude when opening presents…or we just might stop;)

5. All during the holidays have the kids help. Chad and Scott helped make cookies, cook, wrap presents for others, straighten up. After Christmas Day see if the kids can find toys they’re ready to let go of (ones their new gifts can replace). Have them go with you to drop these things off at a shelter or another organization that helps people.

still in jammies, but helping up a storm!

Try to instill that attitude of gratitude early. It can begin to enhance their ability to think of others on their own as they get older.

Christmas brotherly love :)

Good luck during the holidays with gratitude!

A New “Adventure” ?

We all know that stuff happens, right? Well..currently, stuff is happening! In the midst of wonderful happenings involving weddings and babies…major excitements…my 94-year old mom tripped over a curb and broke her hip!!

Now I know what most of you are thinking..well, sure, 94..happens to a lot of old folks! Let me set you just a little bit straight:)) My mother is definitely not an old lady!! She doesn’t tell people her age, so most think she’s somewhere in her early 80′s! She still drives, lives by herself since her husband had to enter a rehab center a couple of years ago, socializes, eats out, and visits her hubby! She is always dressed ‘to the nines’ and never goes without makeup!

So hearing that she was in the hospital and would be having hip surgery was difficult. After 3 nights in the hospital she was transferred to the same rehab where Carl is…for physical therapy on that hip.

arriving at the rehab…Tom and Krista in attendance:))

Here she is meeting up with her sweetie:

he has been so concerned about her…

…with Tom and Carl…

first day in rehab…all smiles!

Mornings have not been the best side of the adventure….her nights are filled with pain and misery, much of it caused by medication issues. It’s hard to see her in the mornings, because she feels so bad.

But…. after she is dressed and in her wheelchair, she perks right up and the day improves! Whew!

pretty mama

handsome Carl..

smiling for the camera

Mom and I just being silly…

…and the 3 of us…

I sure wish the night time was as good for her as the daytime! I spent the night with her last night…just help alleviate some of her anxiety! It did help a bit…she was much quieter, but she definitely didn’t have great sleep until about 4:30 this morning….she is still sleeping now!! I’m so happy about that! I will stay with her until she wakes up so she knows I didn’t leave her!

Meetings at the rehab with all the staff concerned with her care: 11:00 this morning

I will keep you informed…please send along your very special thoughts and prayers for my mom!

Thank You,

Super Saturday #37

Hurray for Super Saturday #37…

Beautiful things, exciting things, inspiring ones…I’ll share with you those things that bring me joy and make me happy!

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) being able to at least try to help teachers in a priority (or failing) school in a district south of here…hard work, many ideas…mostly sharing positive energy! They are overwhelmed and under appreciated … a pretty toxic combination!  Any ideas out there??? Please share:)

2) another photo of the ‘cute’ couple: my mom, almost 94, is looking pretty amazing isn’t she???

and Carl is in such a happy frame of mind …. lovin’ it:))

3) how about another quote to start your day…

“Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine!”

What a great, inspiring quote…you can choose that sunshine for your day, instead of a stormy frame of mind! Give it a try:)

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) helping Mom organize Carl’s video tapes…Tom, you are in trouble when you get here:)))))

After looking through 3 file cabinet drawers, one wooden cabinet, and a TV stand, I found well over 200 tapes!!!! Yikes!!

now, these are all family tapes

these are all space tapes

all 200 of these are for you, Tom, to check out to see if they need to be kept or pitched:))

2) spending time with these two lovelies…

aren't they cute?

3) another beautiful sunrise….don’t be too upset. It’s cloudy and raining right now…but still in the 70′s ;)

Have a beautiful and happy weekend!!

Hurray for Super Saturday #20…

Beautiful things, exciting things, inspiring ones…I’ll share with you those things that bring me joy and make me happy!

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) reminiscing over photos…Danube River Cruise starting with 3 extra days in Prague, awesome! Just a few for you to see of the many 100′s I took!!

Prague Castle

in a train station!!

beautiful stained glass

my buddies, just arrived from long flight!! Gorgeous hotel...Boscolo!

2) birthday dinner for Chad…I fancied up the table, a rare occurrence….but got down to basics for dessert!

potato soup and then pot roast...

the 'famous' cake knife, a smaller version of our favorite bump cake, and a sneaky 'candle' to blow out:))

3) I added another Meals on Wheels day to my schedule…now I’ll be doing the same route on Tuesday one week and on Thursday the next! It’s nice to get to know the people from week to week. They’re not always the same but many are there some weeks and back again later weeks. It may be time for me to grab some flowers again to pass out to these sweet people!

Find your happiness and spread it around…happy Fall and Happy Sweetest Day!

The Story of the Limo

Another wedding story for you…are you ready??

A limousine bus was hired to take the wedding party to the ceremony site: Ladies first, from the hotel to the golf course then the men from one of their houses to the golf course. The bride and bridesmaids were picked up and delivered exactly as planned. The guys were to be picked up next…while the bride was secreted away…and delivered. Nothing happened…no guys…waiting, waiting, …hmmm! What’s going on?

Finally a bridesmaid checked with the guys who were still waiting to be picked up and then called the limo company. Talk about defensive…they said that’s not what they were told, they went back to the hotel to pick up guests (the hotel had its own shuttle for that). After demanding a refund, the girls called the guys and said, “Get here now!!”  This was 30 minutes before the ceremony was to start.  We all assumed there would be 3-4 cars zooming up…there were 7 groomsmen and the groom to be delivered.

Instead….look what came!!

isn't this great?

This beautiful car…which just happened to be in the wedding colors…belongs to one of the groomsmen! All of the guys were in it!!!

yup, they are in there:))

Out comes the groom…

Ready for the big day!!

The car looked a bit like a clown car as all the guys poured out, but it did save the day! The ceremony started about 10 minutes later:))

Sometimes things happen for a reason!! No limo…not a big deal when a better story is the result:)))

Super Saturday #18

Hurray for Super Saturday #18…

Beautiful things, exciting things, inspiring ones…I’ll share with you those things that bring me joy and make me happy!

Here are three things that make me happy:

1) trying to decide if the cat is approving of my reading material or keeping me from reading it:)))

2) enjoying the pouring rain from inside the house…curled up, reading…if the cat allows it…, watching mindless TV  -  all just because I can!   A definite perk of being retired!!

3) having a lovely little lady on the Meals on Wheels route say to me, ” Dear, I love your hair. It makes me happy!”  Isn’t that the sweetest thing to hear???

Super Saturday #4

Hurray for Super Saturday #4…

Beautiful things, exciting things, inspiring ones…I’ll share with you those things that bring me joy and make me happy!

1) leaves and plants growing green .. that amazing spring-time green

2) completing a particular task….writing invitations, affixing labels, buying supplies….any task that can be checked off the list…magic!!

3) for those of you who have loved reading Robert B. Parker books for many years and have been saddened by his death…take heart!! The author who has been given permission to use his name by his estate…Ace Atkins, does a fantastic job using the same familiar characters and the same sarcastic humor we have become used to. The latest book, “Wonderland”, feels just like a Robert B. Parker Spenser book.   Love it:)))

Are There Senior Citizens in Your Life?

Since beginning to deliver Meals on Wheels to seniors last July, I have noticed that MANY of them have inoperable doorbells. Because a high percentage of them also have some difficulties with hearing, vision, and/or mobility they are not always aware when someone is at their door. Those visitors who are at the door cannot tell whether someone is home…and just arriving slowly….or whether they are not at home.

Because I call them before leaving I can tell how many times they might have missed out on someone at the door. Sooo, here’s a thought for those of you with elderly relatives or neighbors. Check their doorbells and make sure they are both working and loud. If they are not, consider buying a new wireless doorbell for them.

After T got one for my mom in Florida, I decided to get one for myself (my doorbell has been erratic for years). Wow! What a difference! And it’s so easy to install!!

This part plugs in to any outlet you choose and can be moved at any time:

It has a very loud chime…with choices for 1 bell, a double bell, or a Westminster chime. It is totally wireless.

The actual doorbell attaches either with double-sided tape or screws, both of which are included.

I bought 2 of these for 2 of the Meals on Wheels folks…partly for them and partly for all those who deliver. They work so well, and the seniors were very happy for the gift (they actually wanted to pay for them…but my idea, my money). I found my on Amazon…should cost less than $20:))

Check out the seniors in your lives…see if these wireless doorbells might be a tiny act of kindness for them:))
