A Great Day

Finally a sunny fall day in Michigan!!!

It was a lovely day for completing tasks…for a change :)

I managed to make some pralines…from my mom’s written recipe!!

Then I had time to have the oil in the car changed and the tires rotated. After having the inside and outside of the car cleaned….I felt like I had a brand new car!!

This doesn’t sound like much, but sunshine leads to bursts of energy for me…while the rain and gloom we have had lately leads me to TV and books! Not that that’s a bad thing ;)

Loving the sun!

Catching Up

I was recently reminded that some of my family…both sons…are not on FaceBook and therefor are not seeing some of the family photos that I have posted! So, because of my dereliction of duties…here are some pics that I have scanned from 27 boxes of slide trays from the 60′s, 70′s, and 80′s.  Don’t worry, they’re not all here :)  Just a few pics, mostly from the 60′s!

Have fun!!

This particular slide is from 1946!!!! ...of yours truly!

a picture of family, from the 50's...yikes!

Sunshiny Sunday #7 ?? Sort of…

Instead of a normal Sunshiny Sunday, I thought I’d return to the cruise from the fall…

Because it’s now March, maybe exploring Ireland would be a good idea…so for today, we took an excursion called “Irish for a Day”.  Our Princess Cruise ship arrived in Dublin:

an Irish Ferry complete with a shamrock!

We headed by bus out of Dublin about an hour to a farm where we were greeted with coffee and scones before learning to make our own Irish soda bread…

our Irish friend is standing on a table giving us our directions :)

hmmm, not bad…

Then we had a hay ride on a wagon to a peat bog…which is now protected a lot like our wetlands are…

the bog, with beautiful heather just beginning to bloom

The turf, which was used for heating, takes millions of years to grow…millimeters at a time! Amazing!

The weather was cooperating at this point!!

After returning to the barn, we got to milk the cows before heading in for lunch.

Lunch was delicious… a vegetable puree soup and then ham, potatoes, cabbage, and carrots along with our very own soda bread and butter. We finished with apple pie for dessert!!

Doesn't it look good?

After lunch we headed to the barn to learn some authentic Irish dances..sorry, no time for pictures…we were too out of breath :)  We also learned how to play the bowron…a drum!

This guy taught us the dances, and yes…everyone participated!! See the drums along the back wall?

We saw Cannemara ponies…very pretty and gentle!

We finished the day watching the sheepherder and his dog herding the sheep. The dog was having so much fun. He didn’t want to stop when the sheepherder was trying to train the next young pup!

What an amazing day in the Irish countryside!! Thank you to the owners of the Causey Farm for inviting us to join them for the day. As an added piece of wonderment…the day ended with this rainbow! …Which became a double rainbow and followed us all the way back to the ship!! Sigh! Who needs reality??!!

look closely for the double rainbow!

It’s too bad pictures can never show the true beauty of real life, but they are a good way to trigger your most beautiful memories!

The Important Things

The important things in life…at least in mine:

LOVE… all kinds, loving yourself enough to let the negatives gooooo, loving others…family and friends, old and young. Love without judging…believe in all possibilities. Use introspection to discover who you love and why…love with awesomeness!!

KNOWLEDGE: Learning…all kinds, what works – mechanically and emotionally, curiosity in all areas, not just books…but people, ideas, thoughts of your own and others, responsibility for accomplishing success in whatever area you want…

KINDNESS: kindness to yourself and others is all about respect, thinking about what you are about to say or do to see if it’s necessary and/or kind…thinking and believing in your own ability to be the good person you’d like to be. Kindness is all-encompassing…and a beautiful thing!

and finally, HAPPINESS: some folks will say that this is just pie-in-the-sky garbage because you can’t plan on happiness…but, I say, phooey on that notion!! I believe in looking for the positive instead of the negative…will the negative be there? Sure! But if I focus on the positive I believe I will find more happiness…whether you call that peace, joy, gratitude…If I smile more and choose to be happy as much as possible, I believe I will have that joy I’m always looking for!! Pollyanna??? Yup…that’s who I want to be :)

So for me, today, these are the important things!!  Think of yours and embrace them!!

Intentions instead of Resolutions

For those of you who have been hanging around our blog for a few years, you know that I have been doing a list of intentions’ rather than ‘resolutions’ for a couple of reasons:

1. the stress involved in trying to complete resolutions leads to feeling bad instead of feeling positive…doesn’t really go along with my ‘mantra’!!

and

2. intentions can easily be ongoing…so when you complete them you can feel successful, when you start you can feel successful, and anywhere along the way you can feel successful….much easier to adjust or even cancel as you, yourself, change.

In the past, some of the things I have completed include:

having the piano tuned and taking piano lessons

completing 3 quilts made from F2′s tshirts

organizing photos, both digital and print

finding photos like these and being able to make folders online

cleaning specific areas of the house, like the garage and the basement

finding treasures

needed cleaning, right?

doing as many philanthropic endeavors as possible..love them!!

Anyway, now my list of intentions becomes more mental than physical…I want to help my kids in any way that I can, including caring for the new grand baby in my life!! I don’t think I need to write any of that down…because I love every part of it :) :)

Most definitely, Happy Parenting!

In case you hadn’t heard….

We are totally surprised with the number of new blog readers:  wow! thanks, everyone, for joining us on our journey. For those of you lovely folks who have been with us for some time, you know we talk about those things that make us happy…and joyful parenting! So, just in case you new readers didn’t know about our parenting book: How to Break 10 Common Childhood Myths …

Here it is  :)

Chad (son) and Diane (mom) wrote the book together to help parents find easier ways to have children who are delightful, respectful, responsible, and eventually independent adults! There are 10 common misbeliefs that kids grab onto and keep forever without a parent’s guide to let go of them. We included lots of stories from our lives…in both of our voices!

Feel free to head to Amazon to find our pretty little book in paperback or on Kindle. It is also available online through Barnes and Noble. It does make a great gift for new parents or grandparents, but also for those with kids anywhere from age 1-18.

For any of you delightful people who already bought one…we express a huge thank you to you. We hope you found the book helpful and enjoyable. Feel free to express your thoughts, good or bad, for others to see.

Christmas gifts anyone??  This is a plug for the book not because of our making any money but because of our love for kids and our hopes for improving future generations!
